Installation guidelines for grounding anodes

Under-surface (extended) and underground grounding anodes (AZ) can be used in cathodic protection systems. Pre-installation preparation and delivery of grounding anodes at the site of electrochemical protection system construction are followed by the installation of the grounding anodes. The works are performed strictly in accordance with the project under the supervision of the qualified specialists.

Recommendations on installation and assembly of extended grounding anodes

Extended grounding anodes are laid along a protected facility at the distance of min its four diameters at a linear part.

The procedure to mount an extended grounding anode is as follows:

  • digging a trench of particular depth and length;
  • placing a grounding anode in a trench;
  • covering a trench with soil with further compacting it.

Recommendations on installation and assembly of underground anodes

Underground anodes (GAZ) are located at the depth of more than 12 - 15 m. They can be installed at the depth of up to 100 m. GAZ is mounted in the boreholes with the length exceeding the diameter of a grounding anode.

GAZ is assembled and mounted in a borehole right after the borehole is drilled. Before that the insulation is checked.

When GAZ is installed, the borehole is filled with coke or clay mud, which is covered with gravel or sand (as it is required by the project).

Recommendations on AZ assembly from iron-silicon anodes ELZhK

Prior being assembled, grounding anodes ELZhK are checked for integrity.

In case of vertical installation a borehole with the depth of up to 100 m and a diameter of 0.25 m and more is drilled. The anodes are secured to a rope, connected to cable coupling in fittings, put into a borehole. Each borehole can fit up to 16 electrodes. The borehole is covered with coke breeze or clay mud.

In case of horizontal installaltion 1 - 2.5 m deep trench is prepared, at design stage it is defined by the soil freezing point. For coke fill, it is placed in a trench at the bottom with 0.1 m layer, it is evenly distributed along the trench and compacted. Grounding anodes ELZhK are at 3 - 5 m from each other, they are covered with coke or clay mud. Cable leads of AZ are connected to the main pipelines in fittings (covers).
